Attribute Challenge Day 30: Servant 2

Hello everyone,

I pray all is well. This is actually an attribute that has been on my heart for a while. Throughout the course of the month, however, I feel like God has put other attributes on my heart that I should focus on for a particular day. Today’s attribute is Jesus as servant.

From Jesus’s birth, life, death, and resurrection, scripture is clear about the servanthood of Jesus. Everything He did and did not do, was for humanity to reconcile with God. Today’s scriptures come from Mark 10: 42-45 (NIV) and John 13: 14-15 (NIV). In Mark 10, James and John requests to sit at the right and left hand of Jesus in heaven. Upon hearing this, the rest of the disciples became indignant towards them. We pick up where Jesus addresses all of the disciples as a response to this. In John 13, we pick up right after Jesus washes the disciples’ feet:

Jesus: “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10: 42-45

Jesus: “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” – John 13: 14-15

I will conclude with a Chinese proverb I just came across, which also speaks to the importance of service:

If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”

Until tomorrow, take care and God bless!
