Iron Man and the Armor of God by Mike Abuan 2

As I mentioned in May, the Hulk vs. God concept inspired me to come up with some ideas for how this general concept (using known superheroes and villains to illustrate/communicate biblical themes) could be expanded. To this end, I must give all glory to God for coming through in a major way….

Once the idea came to me, I started thinking of some known comic characters and how their abilities or certain characteristics could be used to illustrate some of the bible’s most profound and life-changing themes. After jotting down some notes, I reached out to a couple of the Christian comic groups I belong to on Facebook, and I posted about what I was thinking, and if any artists were interested in giving this thing a go, to let me know. One artist, Mike Abuan, responded immediately, and shortly after, we started brainstorming ideas for potential pieces. The idea for the first piece came together pretty easily, and made sense given the Avengers movie had just came out. Here’s the first pic based on Ephesians 6:13-17, which features Iron Man and a teenage boy sporting the Armor of God:

Mike sure is talented right? When he sent me the final version my jaw literally dropped I was so in awe! And this is only the beginning, as you can expect a different pic each month, until either Mike’s schedule gets too crazy, or we run out of ideas. Lord willing, we won’t have to worry about either.

And lastly, the purpose of this pic (and those to follow) is purely to communicate biblical themes in a way that’s creative and relevant to anyone interested in comics. So feel free to download them, use them as profile pics, send them to friends, and so forth.

Stay tuned for July’s pic, and as for which known character is on tap, I’m going to keep that a surprise….

My sons (ages 10 and 12) and I just finished a short devotional series on the armor of God. I was looking for some visual to remind them of what we learned. Most of what I saw was either childish or old-fashioned (in their eyes) This is perfect!!! Thank you so much.
